Liquid Phosphorus Offers Advantage Over Granules in Calcareous Conditions

When phosphorus is applied to calcareous soil it is quickly ‘locked up’ or fixed. Liquid phosphorus fertilisers are usually more effective than granular fertilisers as the phosphorus diffuses away from the application point and is less prone to fixation. Granular fertilisers promote water movement to the granule, resulting in high concentrations of calcium and phosphorus together, which promotes P-fixation. Liquid phosphorus is also easier for crops to access because it is distributed more evenly around the seed and is immediately available compared to granular fertiliser. Liquid phosphorus sources have been shown to be more effective in highly calcareous soils (> 30%).
