Establishing a Carbon Baseline: Why You Need a Qualified, Independent Assessor
Carbon baseline sampling refers to the first round of soil sampling conducted for a new carbon farming project. The baseline measurement is a reference point to track how carbon sequestration is going.
For carbon projects registered with the Clean Energy Regulator, you can’t do the carbon assessments yourself because you have a financial interest in the outcome.
Soil sampling needs to be done by an experienced and qualified service provider (i.e. a soil scientist who has done a few baseline assessments) who also has no financial interest in the project. They can’t be the same person who prepared or reviewed the land management strategy or carbon farming plan either.
If you are thinking of doing a carbon farming project, the best thing to do is contact someone from the industry who has done multiple assessments already. The project needs to be registered before the sampling can happen.
