Project Overview
A drought‑focused case study from the Victorian Mallee
During extended dry seasons, maintaining ground cover is critical to reduce soil erosion risk — especially on wind‑prone soils such as those in the Millewa region near Werrimull. This Agriculture Victoria drought case study shows how a Mallee sheep and cropping family used stock containment areas (SCAs) to hold livestock off exposed paddocks during hot, dry summers and protect stubble cover.
It highlights how SCAs were set up, managed and refined over time, and explains their role in preserving soil cover, reducing erosion and supporting on‑farm efficiency when rainfall is scarce.
